Microsoft Windows XP Power Toolkit

Although Microsoft Windows XP has many features that are designed to enhance the Internet user experience, there are still quite a few third-party tools that greatly improve on what’s available within the operating system.

In this chapter we look at tools that enhance two very common Internet activities—GUI FTP clients that significantly enhance the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) experience beyond what you’ll find in the command-line FTP tool in Windows XP, and graphical user interface (GUI) Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) newsreaders that are significantly better than the newsreader component of Microsoft Outlook Express 6. Although Windows XP offers basic FTP drag functionality from within Internet Explorer, these third-party products have some advanced features that you might find useful.
